Healthy eating and fitness is a big part of NCC and all staff are encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle and enjoy the rewards of sport and being outdoors. We were overjoyed when we received the results of the Discovery Healthy Company Index and received top awards.
The NCC Team have always been a group of healthy energetic individuals who are passionate about going the extra mile and living life to the fullest. So when we received the results of the Discovery Healthy Company Index 2012, that aims to access the health status of SA employees and companies, we were not surprised but still extremely excited that our staff have been acknowledged for their healthy lifestyles.
We placed in the following categories:
- Least Stressed Employees (1st Prize)
- Most Physically Active Employees (3rd Place)
- Healthiest Medium Size Company (5th Place)
- Healthiest Employees in a Medium Size Company (6th Place)
We are most proud of receiving first prize for the ‘Least Stressed Employees’ category. This definitely proves the benefits of working outdoors and living our passion which is a value shared by all NCC employees . It is a known fact that the alignment of an employee’s personal goals and values with their company’s strategic philosophy leads to reduced stress in the workplace. It’s great to know that so many of our employees share our vision of achieving “Real Growth for People, Planet and Business”.
We have various individuals who are always challenging themselves in extreme sports or maintaining a healthy balanced lifestyle in the midst of a busy career. Nick Gates, NCC Environmental Manager, unquestionably takes conventional exercise to the next level. 6 years ago he took part in his first downhill biking race and never looked back. Even after a broken arm, broken collar bone, dislocated shoulder and many cuts and bruises he never once thought of quitting. He loves it for the sheer adrenalin of tackling the South African elements with nothing but a mountain bike.
Madelein Brown, NCC Executive Assistant, is not letting the boys have all the fun. Maddy and her sister received first place in their class at the WCCC 4X4 Challenge held in Swellendam. Each team needed to complete 10 demanding obstacles without touching the ‘danger tape’. Apart from being an avid 4X4’er Maddy has been racing motorbikes since she was 15 even beating her veteran father at the Killarney Race Track, this unbelievable race even made the newspapers!
Healthy eating and fitness is a big part of NCC and all staff are encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle and enjoy the rewards of sport and being outdoors. Yvonne Kamp, Accounts Assistant, takes time out of her busy day of crunching numbers to relax her body and mind by doing Thai Chi and hiking every Sunday. She has been a vegetarian for over 20 years and tries to avoid wheat, sugar and most dairy products. She loves raw & organic food but can’t seem to curb her coffee addiction.
We can’t forget to mention the pure physical endurance and dedication of Philip Dukas, Head of Business Strategy at NCC, who cycled for 33 days from Rucana Falls on the banks of the Cunene River in Northern Namibia to the NCC offices in Westlake, Cape Town. We hope to continue our past 2 years of success with the Discovery Healthy Company Index in 2013 and are eager to see if we can improve our rating of ‘Most Physically Active Employees’ coming 3rd after New Balance and Virgin Active. We see it as an exciting and welcome challenge!
