Groen Sebenza Internship Recruitment

Groen Sebenza Internship Recruitment

NCC is taking part in the Groen Sebenza Jobs fund initiative led by SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute). We are 1 of 33 partner companies taking part in the initiative.

Linda Mare and the 9 NCC Groen Sebenza interns

NCC was awarded 9 interns to remain with us for a period of two and a half years. The idea behind the Jobs Fund programme is to get young people equipped to work. It was identified that as a country we produce thousands of graduates in the Environmental sector each year but somehow we still struggle to find skilled people to employ. This sum is not adding up, is it?  The idea is to place the interns in an ‘incubator’ with partner organisations where they can gain experience, grow their competence and learn new skills through formal training and mentoring and as such becoming adept for employment.

At NCC we strive to employ people who share our vision of real growth for people, planet and business. Recruitment for our 9 Environmental Management interns started in January 2013.  We had over a 1000 applications in less than a month of advertising.  It required quite nifty footwork from our support team to get all the ratings done in line with SANBI’s requirements, essays read and scored in time for interviews in February 2013.

I traveled to Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Polokwane and Makhado (Louis Trichardt) to see a total of 66 aspirant interns.  I was pleasantly surprised at the clear passion expressed by all 66 I interviewed.  I bet the other 930-odd applicants are just as passionate, which really excites me about this industry. Passion cannot be taught or mentored.  Either you have it or you don’t.  Our young Environmentalists – they have it, no doubt!  All they need is someone to take them in and spend the time to teach them how it works in the real world.  NCC is very proud to be able to offer 9 Interns this opportunity.  If we could, we would take 10 000!

The partners are committed to take on a total of 800 graduates and matriculants for a two and a half year period.
